Ten Principles
The 10 Principles were announced by Bhagwan during the 60th Advent Day when HE called for “Integration of the World Community” – a programme of Universal Ahimsa – non-violence – the manifestation of the spiritual dimensions in man. These Principles in general relate to community Sadhana and are examined below to understand their Divine purpose.
  1. Treat as sacred the land, in which you were born. Have patriotism to your Nation – but do not criticize other Nations or put others down. Not even in your thoughts or dreams should you think bringing grief to your country.
Our own Motherland, whether it be by origin or adoption, has nurtured us – providing us with a home, giving us education and the capacity to earn a living, in addition to providing us with security and protection apart from the facilities and amenities that we enjoy today. We should reciprocate all this with LOVE and think how best we could be of SERVICE to the Motherland. In this manner, we will be discharging our debt of gratitude to the country. We should not hate or criticize other Nations but live in very close friendly terms with them, because they are also reflections of the One Divinity that is the source of the entire creation.

  2. Respect all Religions – Equally.
All religions teach the same “TRUTH”. Their fundamentals tenets are identical. Different terms may be used in different religious texts for defining basic principles but their meanings are same. All religions emphasize that devotees should “BE GOOD”, “SEE GOOD” and “DO GOOD”. We should not condemn the faith of others. We should extend respect and regard due to all religions. The different religions take us on their different paths to one and only GOD, who is known by different names. The underlying unity behind the apparent diversity should be appreciated. The same divine teachings flow through all religions. Therefore mix freely with those of different faiths and join in celebrating various Religious Festivals. In this manner we will be cultivating tolerance for the different faiths. God’s name may be spoken in various languages and will sound different but the one GOD belongs to all.

  3. Recognize the Brotherhood of Man – treat all as brothers – Love All:
It should be appreciated that all men and women, irrespective of their complexion, colour, height, race, language and other characteristics, are only reflections and projections of that Divinity which is the source of the entire creation. In as much as the Divine spark permeates through every man and woman, Love should govern all human relations.

  4. Keep your house and surroundings clean – for this will promote hygiene and health and help you:
When it is appreciated that entire creation is a manifestation of God in different forms and shapes, it follows that divinity resides also in your house and surroundings which are a part of this creation. It is therefore your bounden duty to maintain them in perfect cleanliness. This is necessary also to maintain your health and happiness.

  5. Practise charity – but do not encourage beggars by giving money….provide food, clothing, shelter and help them in other ways (do not encourage laziness):
Instead of giving coins to a beggar, we should, if we find that he is physically fit, coax him to do some form of physical work before he is given some coins. This is to provide him self-reliance and to discourage him from begging. If the beggar is infirm, weak or aged, then arrangement could be made to get him to the Home of Aged or the Welfare Homes or to provide him otherwise with food, clothing and shelter. On the other hand, if the beggar needs medical attention, he should be referred to the Doctor or the Hospital. Practise of charity in this manner, demonstrate the bond of love which exists between man and man as manifestations of the One Divinity.

  6. Never give a bribe or take a bribe – (Never give in to corruption):
Bribery is corruption: it is usually employed or restored to, in an effort to achieve one’s wishes or desires fulfilled, at the earliest opportunity and in an irregular manner. It is therefore immoral and results in upsetting order and harmony and peace, and encouraging the negative qualities of greed, anger and jealousy. These hinder the manifestation of Divinity of man. Bribery goes against the very embodiment of Truth and Right Conduct which are an important part of 5 principles of Sai.

  7. Curb envy and jealousy, expand your vision and outlook, treat all equally regardless of caste or creed:
Encouragement of envy and jealousy prevent the manifestation of Divinity in man. Having even one of the characteristics, the mind will certainly be uneasy and turbulent. Therefore we have to constantly examine, our actions, our words, and our thoughts, to ensure that they are guided by Love and not jealously, hatred, envy etc. In this manner we will be able to expand our vision and follow right conduct and give expression to the Divinity inherent in us.

  8. Try to do as much as possible by yourself – you may be wealthy and have servants – your servants can help – but service to society must be done personally – by yourself:
Sai devotees, in carrying out Seva activities, should not depend on servants or the labour force.

When service is rendered by Sai devotees through servants (who may not be devotees)much of the value of service is lost. It is necessary that the service should be rendered directly by the devotees themselves so that the recipients appreciate that it is done by Sai organization and the Sai message reaches them through the conduct and attitude of the devotees. The devotee will thereby be able to build up self-confidence which is the first step on the path of realization. Further, rendering of service directly by Sai devotees will help them to develop awareness of the Divinity inherent in each recipient of the service. For similar reasons, Sai devotees should not depend on others to serve their personal needs.

  9. Have and cultivate “Love for God and Fear of Sin – Have hatred for SIN”:
God is not anything external. He is within us and around us everywhere. The Bible states, “The kingdom of God is within you”. He is the sole support of our existence. We have therefore to develop Love for God. When we show regards and respect to a fellow-human being, responding to him, when he is in difficulties, we are doing service to God through him.

If our thoughts are bad, evil and wicked, it is already sin. This is why we should resort to purity of heart, which will enable us to develop Love of God and awareness of the Divinity inherent in us. Bhagwan also reminds us “Sin you talk of exists not in unknown land. Verify; it is the result of the deeds of man”. Therefore let us endevour to take care of our deeds, which will help to eliminate sin ultimately.

  10. Never go against the laws of the land – follow these diligently – both in words and spirit – be an exemplary citizen :
The laws framed by the State or the Nation are meant not to curb one’s freedom, but to create an atmosphere, and environment, of freedom with defined limits so that there is order and peace for every body to make life more meaningful, pleasant and happy. Such an atmosphere would be conducive for allying the agitations of the mind and developing awareness of Divinity. If the laws are not observed, there would be chaos and suffering. Hence the importance of observing laws of the land.
